I guess it depends on the town you live in. Our experience with the local Toyota dealership was different - granted it was four years ago when we wanted to buy a hybrid and had been told by friends how happy they were with their Toyota. The building was then 1960's shabby, the salesman was indifferent and there was never a follow-up to see if we'd ever made a decision. We didn't buy a hybrid.

The BMW dealership is new, has an eager service department that crawls all over and into your car to discover what switch is making the "service needed" light go on or the false alarm indicating brake problems. The salesman is still friendly after seven years away from having sold us the 500 series sedan. He never forgets a face. And he shows up whenever a visit is scheduled for service, that rare occasion, to greet the owner warmly.

But you're right. One of the principle elements one should consider when buying a car is the location, condition and morale of the service department. When GM and Ford realize this, perhaps their prospects will improve.

I'm not really talking Toyota here, mostly Lexus (owned by Toyota). I have yet to see a Lexus shop that wasn't quite impressive.

I owned SUV from GM and I am very satisfied with the services that they been offering me for the past three years I've owned their car... It reminds when I had to purchase a GM throttle body spacers to provide more airflow in the combustion chamber of my SUV... They provided me the best throttle with a great discount... I love GM... Thanks...
